Have you ever wondered about where the original idea for the advent calendar came from? It is a pretty good story actually – and it doesn’t even go that far back. Over the years it has evolved into one of the most popular gift concepts, especially for Christmas of course. But also for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and basically all the other special days of the year.

Where the word ‘advent’ comes from

Let us first discuss the meaning of the word ‘advent’. It is derived from the Latin phrase ‘coming toward.’ The word is used for the period from November the 30th (the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle) until Christmas on the 24th, so back then it was 25 days. The idea of recognizing this specific period started in Germany in the late 19th century. Back then, Lutherans used chalk to make marks on their doors from the 1st of December to countdown to the 24th.

Where it al started

Nobody is entirely sure where the idea for our modern-day advent calendar really came from. It was probably in Germany, but it could also have been in Austria. The story goes that a mother made a special piece of cardboard for her son with 24 little sweets stuck in it, to count down the days until Christmas. The boy liked this idea so much, that later in life, he opened a printing office where he printed the very first version of an advent calendar. This was in 1908. From that moment on it was just a matter of time before he created an advent calendar with little doors in it – like we know it nowadays. And in addition to the 24-day advent calendars, also came the ones with 12 days.

From chocolates to wine

Sweets and chocolates were popular treats to put behind the doors of advent calendars, and they still are. Another traditional thing you can find behind those little doors are bible verses. Over the years more and more variety came in the area of advent calendars. People found that there are a lot of things you can put in an advent calendar, besides chocolate. Nowadays there are advent calendars with cosmetic products, little soaps, candles, toys, games, you name it. And of course, and this was by far the best idea if you ask us, tiny bottles of alcoholic beverages like whiskey, beer and wine. So, there you have it – the start of one of our favorite advent calendars – the TUBES wine advent calendar.
